Rugby league fan handed 20-year ban by his club

Rugby league ground

A rugby league fan has been given a huge 20-year ban from attending the sport after racially abusing a former Super League star in Australia.

After a rivalry match last month between Woy Woy Roosters and Wyong Roos, a brawl between fans and players happened, in disgraceful scenes.

According to former NRL champion, Andrew Fifita (the Woy Woy player-coach) the melée was caused after him being racially vilified consistently during the game.

Fifita is twin to former Wakefield Trinity man David Fifita.

He then revealed the same man was responsible for sending him abusive messages on multiple social media platforms – some of which included racial slurs.

After hearing the abuse, players and fans from Woy Woy confronted the man.

Following this, the Central Coast Rugby League shared a media release saying that Woy Woy fans would be banned from their next game – without noting that the violence had been due to racism from a Wyong fan.

Fifita furious with the Central Coast Rugby League response

This isn’t the first time he’s been victim to similar, Fifita was furious, saying: “It was awful to see their statement come out with nothing in there to do with racism.

“There are a lot of indigenous people around Woy Woy. If he’s going to yell out racial slurs then he has it coming to him. He got asked to leave. The crowd heard what we said. That’s why they waited for him.

“If there’s no racism, there’s no fight. For me and my club, they are making us look like idiots, that we’ve gone outside and had a brawl. Someone should explain what actually happened.”

The media release was bullshit. It had nothing to do with racism. That’s the worst thing for me. It’s appalling. We will put them in their place, they can’t avoid this.

“I won’t stand back and let my players get racially abused. I want to speak up. You can’t be screaming racial slurs at people. The only team that is suffering at the moment is my team. What he (the fan) said was abusive and uncalled for.”

The CCRL president said: “Ultimately, the decision to remove the spectators at this stage was to essentially calm the situation for this weekend and allow the process to take place with regards to the police investigation that is underway and the investigations that NSWRL are doing.”

Rugby league fan banned for 20 years

Now, the fan has been banned for 20 years by the NSWRL in a sensational response.

A NSWRL statement read: “NSWRL chief executive David Trodden said the racial vilification received by True Blue and Woy Woy coach Andrew Fifita was disgusting.

“The NSWRL treats such matters very seriously which is reflected in the fact the person responsible has received a 20-year suspension.

“Justin Bayley has been suspended from all facets of rugby league for 20 years after being found guilty of code of conduct breaches including racial vilification against Fifita following a Rugby League Central Coast first grade match between Woy Woy Roosters and Wyong Roos at Woy Woy Oval on Sunday, 9 June.”

Justin Bayley’s son plays as a stand-off for Wyong.
