2025 Rugby League Ashes get seal of approval from Mal Meninga as Aussie boss previews England

There will be a return to the rugby league Ashes next year, and as it stands Australia look set to travel to England for a three-game series.

Initially, England had been set to travel down under but recent reports suggest that the Kangaroos will travel to England to contest the three-match series.

Both Australia and England had a vastly successful international window this autumn, with the Kangaroos winning the Pacific Championships and England winning both games in a series against Samoa.

That, added on to the Super League and NRL fixtures in Las Vegas next year (on top of a women’s game between England and Australia), means there’s a lot of momentum ahead of this 2025 Ashes tour.

Speaking to NRL.com, Australia legend (and current head coach) Mal Meninga was full of praise for England, saying: “I love watching the English game because of their openness and the way they play the game.

“They are very fluent in the way they do it but when they put that English jersey on they are always competitive, they are such a hard side to beat, they have a great history, and they have got great players over there.

“I think there is no doubt the Samoa side can be better as well but for our international space it is great to see England doing well.”

He also suggested that he would be open to the tour taking place in England, saying: “I don’t know where we are going to play at this stage, but we won’t just be expecting to win.

“We know we are going to have our work cut out. It is an Ashes series and there is so much tradition and history around that.

“We haven’t done one for such a long time, so it is going to be enormous, and I know the players in the Australian side at the moment are excited by it, particularly if we go to England.

“There is nothing better than getting a group together and travelling to England to play three tough Tests in an Ashes series.”
