Super League is at a crossroads.
There is a genuine feeling that the current structure of one-up, one-down promotion and relegation isn’t working.
The alternative of licensing, however, has already been tried and was brought in for three years before being shelved once more for promotion and relegation.
For rugby league agent, Craig Harrison – otherwise known as Show Me The Money UK – and Bradford Bulls journalist The Game Caller, the two league of ten teams is the likeliest outcome.
“If it’s Featherstone and Leigh (to earn promotion) – based on what they are spending – then let’s hope Derek (Beaumont – Leigh owner) and Mark (Campbell – Featherstone chairman) trust those young players because top teams will cherry pick their best players,” Harrison said on the Full Eighty Minutes podcast.
“They have the best players picked then they get six to eight weeks to recruit – it’s shocking, so two leagues of ten would work a lot better.”
The Game Caller added: “If we are going towards two tens – which is the music I am hearing – then those two that go from the Championship are going to be in a real mess next year because if they are not in that top position in League One then they face being unfunded.
“That is the proposal, whether or not it gets voted through is another thing, but League One clubs have gone from £75,000 to £20,000 in central funding.”
