Hull KR versus York Knights talking points

Rovers on a roll

After a slow start to the season, Hull KR have started to find their form in the past few weeks and today was a prime example of that, even if York were depleted.

Tyrone May got the afternoon started with a try after just 90 seconds and Sauaso Sue’s score inside ten minutes made it clear it was going to be a long afternoon for York.

Despite difficulties with the wind, Hull KR looked incredibly impressive and perhaps what is scarier is the fact that you get the sense they’re not close to their best.

Tyrone May stars

It was Tyrone May who scored the opener and in truth, it was the Tyrone May show with Hull KR’s string-puller turning try-scorer as he bagged himself a hat-trick.

His first was just a result of running a strong supporting line, whilst his second saw him slice through but it was his third that most caught the eye as May slotted into the running half role whilst Mikey Lewis received treatment. That sort of heads-up play highlights why he’s so underrated with the classy half the standout for the Robins.

York feeling the pinch

Mark Applegarth made it clear coming into this game that he was short on troops and his matdhcay squad emphasised that with players played out of position and loanees Myles Harrison and Joe Law starting in the backs.

Despite winning two of their first three games in Super League, the Knights have lost four in the league since and they’re now out of the cup and it’s becoming evident that they’re in for a long season.

Of course, that’s to be expected when they were tasked with putting together a Super League squad in just a few months and with half the central funding and their lack of squad depth is now starting to show.

Mikey Lewis moment

A brilliant try but a worrying knock as well, Mikey Lewis finds headlines everywhere. Whilst it was Tyrone May who stole the show, as mentioned above, Lewis still catches the eye.

His running threat was evident early on as he helped carve open York’s right edge to set up the first of May’s three tries but he’d continue to challenge York’s line all game.

In the second-half when full-back Nikau Williams stepped into the line, Lewis was quick to chip over the top into the open backfield and reclaim the ball brilliantly to score his try. Just minutes after that, the former Man of Steel took a knock and had his thigh heavily strapped, something that KR will want to monitor.
