Last year Morgan Gannon missed out on the semi-final and the Grand Final after getting concussed against Catalans Dragons after a thunderous clash with Sam Kasiano.

Then against Hull FC the exciting young backrow suffered another head knock.

Unsurprisingly, Gannon then missed the St Helens clash but he will also sit out the Wakefield Trinity game this week.

This isn’t mandatory but is an example of Rohan Smith protecting the youngster.

Smith would explain this in his press conference today saying: “We feel it is important with young players particularly but players in general that they do a suitable amount of training and make some effort to improve strength and technique and not just ticking the boxes and doing the protocols.

“Morgan has seen a specialist and had an MRI and we’re just getting all the information together so we can get him to return.

“He hasn’t had any symptoms and in his graduated return to training but we are taking longer than we would with a regular player because he is young and has had a bump in the past.

“We want to be as supportive as we can so he can build his season.”

Fortunately James Bentley is back in the mix this week which will lessen his absence though Justin Sangare is absent after the birth of his daughter.
