Rohan Smith not a fan of the media’s approach to Super League fixtures

Leeds Rhinos

A lot of rugby league news and Super League news has been dominated by transfer and contract talk especially as clubs like Leeds Rhinos, Wigan Warriors, Warrington Wolves and Hull KR make announcements whilst other clubs like St Helens, Hull FC and Huddersfield Giants are linked with transfers themselves.

But one big story has been that of Blake Austin. The Rhinos halfback has been in excellent form lately.

However, he has yet to agree a new deal with the Rhinos reportedly due to a dispute over the length of the deal with Austin wanting two years and Leeds offering one.

There has been a lot of talk about Austin and things reached a peak recently.

Having claimed the Man of the Match award against Warrington on Sky Sports, for the second week in a row no less, Austin sent a very clear message to the higher ups at Headingley.

“I’m not sure Gary has been watching. He hasn’t called yet asking to discuss the contract. Hopefully I can press my case and get something sorted,” he said.

“Yeah, I don’t know if Leeds’ preference is for me to stay. I’d love to hear from them.”

Interestingly after the game Sky Sports spotted Chief Executive Gary Hetherington speaking to Blake Austin in the changing rooms after the match.

Also noteworthy was the fact Aidan Sezer was sat next to Austin. Hetherington looked animated but happy.

Brian Carney joked saying: “Maybe he is trying to negotiate a new deal.”

Rohan Smith was asked about this theatre recently and said he would prefer if the media would focus on the game.

“Personally, I think pre and post game we should be talking about the game that was just about to be played or the game that was just played.

“But that’s probably the analytical or coaching mind that I have. For those that are looking for entertainment and stuff, maybe it was entertaining that.”
