Leeds Rhinos coach Rohan Smith has confirmed that one of their most exciting up and coming young players has rejected a substantial offer to remain at the club.
That player is Sam Walters who has an impressive future ahead of him.
Walters hasn’t played perhaps as much as some Leeds fans might wish he had this season and they feared it would propel him to look at offers elsewhere and that was reportedly what Walters did.
Smith confirmed that the club made him a substantial offer that he turned down.
“We made Sam a really strong offer. A long term offer and a massive upgrade on his previous contract,” Smith said today when asked about Walters’ future before adding.
“And that is where the conversation came to an end. I am not sure where he is going to end up.”
Following this, he was asked if the club are resigned to losing the tall forward. Smith said:
“That’s where it is at the moment.”
Finally, Smith was asked if there was any chance of Walters making a u-turn and agreeing to the contract from Leeds, and he replied:
“That’s something you would have to take up with Sam and his management.”
So, it seems Walters is headed to pastures new and according to reports he is headed to Leeds’ Saturday opponents Wigan Warriors in 2024.
