Rohan Smith breaks down “fantastic” try in Leeds Rhinos win over Warrington Wolves

Leeds’ attack has been their downfall in 2022.

The Rhinos, coming into Round 14 and the midway mark of the season, had the worst offence in the league and had only scored one try in their own half.

They’d also only passed the 30-point mark in a game once. However, all that changed last night as they battered Warrington 40-4 to really put themselves in the play-off hunt.

The Rhinos played some exquisite stuff whether it was Kruise Leeming’s innovative kick which engineered the opening try for David Fusitu’a or the delightful blind side play from a scrum that led to Ash Handley’s first, Leeds produced a real highlight reel of diverse tries.

It was the main thing that needed addressing when Rohan Smith came to the club and he has delivered.

However, despite the number of superb tries scored, there was one in particular which caught the eye and that was Leeming’s score which put Leeds back in front.

The try came from an inside ball from Richie Myler to Zak Hardaker where Myler held the ball for less than a second before flicking it inside to the on rushing Hardaker.

After the game, Smith was waxy lyrical about the try believing that’s what the sport is all about: “It’s fantastic, it’s what combat sport’s about: executing the skill under physical pressure. It’s not easy to compose yourself as you’re about to get hit as you’re trying to execute a skill. The way he held himself together, he deserves respect.”

He also went on to explain what he’s tried to change in the Leeds attack: “I like how we’re playing each play for what it’s worth rather than being too structured. They’re just playing.

“It gives us a bit of belief and reason to keep working on what we’re doing.

“Most coaches will tell you support play is an important aspect of the game. We did it really well against Wakefield as well and tonight we were able to throw a few more passes on the back of that.”
