Robert Hicks has congratulated the RFL’s new employee upon his appointment to the governing body.
Hicks, who himself was appointed the RFL’s Director of Operations and Legal in October, welcomed Ben Abberstein to the RFL’s ranks following his appointment as Inclusion Lead.
Abberstein previously held the role of Disability Access Officer and Disability Liaison Officer at Bournemouth FC for six years so is highly qualified for the role.
And, Hicks was sure of the contribution the new man would bring to the sport: “Welcome to @TheRFL Ben, it is a great sport and I know you will make a huge difference. Im sure your time here will see massive changes and improvements across inclusion for our sport.”

Hicks himself had been a member of the RFL’s panel of full-time officials since 2011, when he also joined the RFL’s legal team.
Now that balance has shifted, with his primary focus on the Operations and Legal role – although he will continue as a part-time official, with a focus on offering support to developing young talent.
It’s a new era for the governing body as they continue trying to steer rugby league through the uncertain period of the pandemic.
