Rob Burrow-themed Shirt and Rugby League starting XIII revealed for 745 Game

Ash Handley Super League

The starting line-up and the shirt for the Rugby League team in the 745 Game, in memory of Rob Burrow, have been revealed.

Recently, both the Rugby League and Rugby Union squads were confirmed with dozens of stars on show but now the starting thirteen for each team have been confirmed.

The shirt that the Rugby League team has also been revealed with it being designed by the children of Rob Burrow and based upon the one worn at Magic Weekend in 2022.

Rob Burrow and Ed Slater came together to create the concept of the game which is a hybrid sport and pits the 13-man versus the 15-man code, designed to be played to raise funds to combat Motor Neurone Disease, of which both men were diagnosed with.

The pair took inspiration from fellow MND warrior Doddie Weir and thus the name of the game originated as it utilised each man’s playing number with Rob Burrow (7), Ed Slater (4) and Doddie Weir (5) all recognised.

It will take place at Headingley on Sunday afternoon and there are hopes that it could become a yearly tradition with all the rules of the game laid out here.

As for the teams, it’s now been confirmed that former teammate of Rob Burrow, Danny McGuire, will partner Luke Gale in the halves whilst a handful of Burrow’s other teammates also feature in the starting thirteen.

Keith Senior, Kylie Leuluai, Gary Connolly, Ewan Dowes, Paul McShane and Gareth Ellis will also start meaning that over half of the starting thirteen will have played with Rob Burrow at some point.

As for the bench, Matt Diskin is a standout name along with recent York Knights signing Jacques O’Neill.

The Rugby League team will wear a shirt specially designed by Rob’s children which is based on the 2022 Magic Weekend shirt, emblazoned with the touching message of ‘There’s only one Daddy Rob’ on the back of the shirt. It also features the number seven sash across the chest.

As for the Rugby Union side, they will wear Ed Slater’s colours of red whilst the referees, who will hail from both codes with Ben Thaler the Rugby League representative, will wear Doddie Weir’s tartan.

So the League team will be made up of retired, some almost crippled through injuries, coaches, trainers, and former colleagues. Whereas the Union side will be made up of current five Nations best players in order ro keep the score down?
