Rob Burrow and his father Geoff respond to Government u-turn over MND funding

Motor Neurone Disease is one of the most horrendous diseases known to man, and the whole rugby league community’s heart broke when it was revealed that Leeds legend Rob Burrow had been diagnosed with MND in December 2019.

The two-time Harry Sunderland Award winner has faced the tragic circumstances dealt his way like the champion he always was during his playing days. He adopted a no cry policy at home and has taken to raising money to help find a cure also inspiring millions of people to take on amazing challenges to raise money for various MND charities. he’s inspired the rugby league world to take the fight to the awful disease.

Look at what Kevin Sinfield was able to achieve with his seven marathons in seven days raising £3 million and he’s not the only one.

The next step for Burrow and his crusaders was a £50 million grant from the government to help find a cure to end the plight of the around 50,000 MND sufferers in the UK which the government sadly denied when the budget was officially released in late October.

Burrow’s father Geoff spoke out against the decision via the Yorkshire Evening Post and the BBC and it seems his cries have not fallen on deaf ears now that it has been announced that the government has reversed their decision and given the £50 million over five years needed to help find a cure.

Geoff subsequently responded on Twitter, thanking those who helped prompt the government to reverse their decision: “What wonderful news that the Government have agreed to the £50 million pounds, over 5 years, to fund finding a Cure for MND. Thank you to everyone for all your support – too many people to thank personally. God Bless you all.”

Then Rob himself echoed what his father said retweeting his father’s thank you message with the line: “The best news dad.”
