Richie Myler’s Challenge Cup verdict as he lists alternative Hull FC venues

Hull FC could be set to make the trip to either Doncaster or Featherstone to play their Challenge Cup tie with York Acorn. The Black and Whites are one of three Super League clubs taking on amateur opposition in the third round of the competition, with the National Conference League Premier Division outfit set to host John Cartwright’s side.

However, there is some doubt about whether Acorn’s home ground on Thanet Road will be able to accommodate Hull and their travelling fanbase, who will be keen to see their side take on the amateur outfit.

As such, alternative locations are being considered it seems, with the clash potentially set to take place at what would be a neutral venue elsewhere in Yorkshire, with FC’s CEO Myler naming just two potential options that have been mentioned.

“It’s an interesting one,” Myler told the media in a briefing at the Hull FC training ground on Monday morning. “I love football, and I love the FA Cup, and I love the dream that any team can get to Wembley and any team can play.

“I think the logistics of it are a little bit different, which we’re finding out at the moment about how an amateur team, if we’re playing at their ground, and the stipulations that get put on them to fulfil that fixture and play at their ground.

“I’m not sure if that can happen at the moment, so where that fixture gets played at this moment in time, I couldn’t tell you. There’s talk of it being at Featherstone or Doncaster or somewhere like that.”

He added: “The beauty of it is, if you were playing for York Acorn, you’d be loving it, wouldn’t you, getting to go up against a Super League side. Anybody playing in those games, I think Eamon McManus mentioned player welfare, but it’s not my opinion; someone else has put the game on.

“Do I think it will happen next year? No. I don’t think it will. I think we’ll be coming in at round four or round five. That’s more of a sensible option, but we are where we are.”

Leeds Rhinos and St Helens will also be in action against non-league sides with the two clubs travelling to Wests Warriors and FC’s neighbours West Hull respectively. However, the latter of those two amateur sides are applying to host the game at their home ground, Johnny Whiteley Park, says coach Glyn Jones.

Hull KR have offered to host the game, Jones said on X, while another option would be to reverse the fixture.

“There has been a lot of interest in our game, unfortunately, its still not 100% on the venue as there are a lot of rules and regulations been put in place,” Jones wrote on the social media platform.

“We are applying to hold it at West Hull and hopefully will be allowed, if not, Hull KR have kindly offered to host us and the other option is to reverse the fixture!

“If we can’t hold it at Johnny Whiteley Park, we will look at what is best for the club.”
