With Hull FC heading towards their worst-ever win percentage in a season in their 159-year history, Director of Rugby Richie Myler has penned a letter to the club’s supporters.
Hull FC have won just three games all season and back-to-back weeks of them conceding ten tries has seen them slip to the bottom of Super League with just one round of games to go.
The team’s points-for and points-against averages are already the worst in their history but a loss to Catalans Dragons at the MKM Stadium this week would cement the 2024 campaign as the worst-ever in their 159-year history, in terms of win percentage.
That’s not something that Richie Myler, the club’s Director of Rugby who was appointed earlier in the season, will want to be associated with him and the former Leeds Rhinos man has penned a letter to the fans addressing the poor season.
Within it, he has claimed Hull FC are a “million miles away” from where they wish to be, before explaining the factors that have caused such a situation despite claiming that it is not a “finger-pointing exercise”.
He has also referenced Derek Beaumont’s accusation of Hull FC ‘putting the cue in the rack’, something that he denies.
The full statement can be seen below.
Hull FC Director addresses terrible season
Posting on the Hull FC club site, the following statement was released.
“A message to our members and supporters from the club’s Director of Rugby, Richie Myler…
“As a club, we are currently a million miles away from where everybody associated with Hull FC wants us to be. A lot of factors have contributed to the club being in the position we currently find ourselves in.
“The board hears your frustrations; believe me when I say, we cannot and will not continue in this current manner. This is not a finger-pointing exercise, or a blame game towards any one individual. But clearly, certain members of our organisation are not delivering on their roles, and ultimately we need to make a change.
“Representing Hull FC carries a weight much heavier than most clubs in the competition, and expectations are rightly much higher than other clubs due to the potential we hold.
“But, in the same way as a player might have ‘potential’, ‘potential’ can only take you so far. Hard work, dedication, and committing yourself to a cause bigger than yourself has to be paramount. Without those factors, you end up where you deserve to be.
“This is the reality of the club over the past four years; and it hits home when you consider our current league position.
“As members and supporters, you have the right to be frustrated. You have the right to demand change. You have the right to expect more from us.
“But, I believe there is a brighter future for Hull FC.
“Rugby League is an unforgiving sport. The margin for error is so small that if you aren’t all in it together, pulling in the same direction, or if you take your eye off the ball, you fail. Currently, we are failing.
“A lot of talk has been that our focus is purely on 2025, and we have “put the cue in the rack”. I can assure you all that every day, we are working tirelessly to solve our situation. To get back to where we want this club to be, we have to change fundamentally.
“We cannot thank our members and supporters enough for their ongoing support in these difficult moments.”

Who, or what, is the actual problem? In the past it has been said to be down to a “drinking culture” within the squad, but those players are long since retired or moved on. It can’t be poor facilities, they have some of the best in Super League. It’s certainly not the fans fault, and I’m a Rovers fan saying that, they live and breathe the club, they’d run, walk, crawl, wheel themselves onto the pitch if called on! There is something deeply entrenched there that is causing the problem. It needs to be identified, excised, and those that don’t like that can go too! Grix, Cummings, and others are not daft, not lacking in skill or abilities, they’re committed, but there is a disjoint somewhere. I’m well aware success in rugby in Hull depends on your face fitting, I know many players from the amateur game heads and shoulders above those who went to Hull or Rovers, but their face didn’t fit, they didn’t know the right people, etc. That’s been happening since I was a lad decades ago. Whatever the problem it needs to change, I felt sorry for the fans in the Salford game, the team were awful, Salford could have declared after 30 minutes! It’s not cheap going either, money is tight, in Hull especially so. Many are priced out of the game, if they watched this they might be relieved, it was gruesome viewing. The fans deserve better than this. The sport is best served by two strong Hull clubs.
