Richie Mathers and Chev Walker back ex-Bradford Bulls boss for Leeds Rhinos job

The new favourite for the Leeds Rhinos job, according to the Daily Telegraph is former Featherstone Rovers head coach Ryan Carr.

Carr is currently under contract at Parramatta Eels’ feeder club, Mounties, in the New South Wales Cup and it’s unknown whether the club would release him.

Just 33 years of age, the former coach of the South Sydney NYC side, Carr took over from Mick Potter at Parramatta.

UK bookies have already been working out the odds for the next head coach at Leeds. However, two former Leeds and Bradford Bulls stars Richie Mathers and Chev Walker have thrown another candidate into the ring – Rohan Smith.

Smith was the final coach of the Bulls before they ultimately went into liquidation in early-2017, but both Mathers and Walker played under him as he earned the raps of those around Odsal at the time.

Though he coaches at the Norths Devils in the second tier of Australian rugby league, it remains to be seen whether he would be tempted for a shock move to Headingley.

Former Rhinos prop Danny Ward – who only recently picked up a new job in rugby union – is out in front as the bookies’ favourite at 2/1.

Former Featherstone boss Carr is priced at 7/2 with, surprisingly, Michael Monaghan – who plied his trade with Warrington Wolves in Super League – next at 9/2.

There is even space for Catalans Dragons head coach Steve McNamara at 7/1 and Ian Watson at 8/1.

Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington said the hunt had started to replace Agar, but that it would not be rushed.

“We do plan to appoint a new head coach and will apply a comprehensive recruitment process but there is no predetermined timescale for this appointment,” Hetherington said.
