Richard Agar opens up on relationship with Gary Hetherington

Richard Agar and Gary Hetherington have worked together as head coach and chief executive since midway through 2019.

It was the sacking of former Leeds Rhinos boss David Furner that handed Agar the reins as the West Yorkshire club found themselves slipping down the table and in actual danger of relegation.

And, now Agar has opened up on the roles that both men have taken in terms of negotiating transfers and retentions since that very moment.

“I used to work closely with Kevin (Sinfield, when he was director of rugby) and now I work with Gary,” Agar said.

“He’s an extremely experienced administrator, but it’s collaborative and not something I want to get into too much with players.”

The Leeds head coach was, however, keen to stress that it’s necessary to get the balance right throughout the squad which can lead to some stars departing.

“Money can certainly create tension or friction because it could go either way.

“I very much leave that to Gary and the players leave that to their agents, but market values can make or break a club if you get them right or wrong.

“It’s a big jigsaw but also a balancing act as salary cap issues means players depart clubs and you have to balance your roster out.

“But, that model can look different from one club to the next.”
