Departing Leeds Rhinos star Rhyse Martin says his side have been given a “wake-up call” after narrowly avoiding defeat to London Broncos.
The Rhinos survived a late Oli Leyland conversion attempt hitting the post and a Jack Campagnolo golden point drop-goal attempt hitting the crossbar before Brodie Croft managed to secure the two points.
In the game, Rhyse Martin was instrumental – he scored all 20 points in regular time for Leeds, scoring a hat-trick and kicking the conversions and a penalty kick.
During the game, he reached 1,000 points for Leeds Rhinos, and said to the club’s media: “I knew I had 14 points left to get, but it didn’t really click on the scoreboard. I was just happy that Crofty kicked that field goal really.
“Just keeps our season alive: we get to go again next week, and we’re still in the race for the play-offs.
“It’s something that I really wanted to tick off before the end of the year.”
He didn’t have much more time to achieve the milestone: he’s heading to Hull KR ahead of next season.
Rhyse Martin details “wake-up call” for Leeds Rhinos
Leeds Rhinos are currently just one point off the play-off spots, with Leigh Leopards ahead due to their draw to Castleford Tigers earlier this year – the only one that has occurred during the 2024 Super League season.
With just three games to go, it’s incredibly close – and Martin said: “We’ve been building very solidly over the last month or so and some of the performances that we’ve been turning out have been really positive.
“This is just a wake-up call, it’s tough to be under the pump and find a way to win. It’s a real positive for the group that we’ve found a way to win and to get the two points.”
They will certainly be hoping the wake-up call kicks them into gear, as their remaining opponents include the top two sides in the league: Wigan Warriors and Hull KR.
