RFL sign off on Huddersfield Giants’ stadium switch as £10 million development plan approved

Huddersfield Giants have secured approval from the Rugby Football League [RFL] for their plans to relocate to Dewsbury for the 2027 season.

In early August, the Giants announced an ambitious plan to move to and develop Dewsbury’s FLAIR Stadium with the proposed investment sitting at around £10 million.

Such huge investment would see the stadium brought up to Super League standards whilst a new East Stand was set to be built, thus increasing the ground’s capacity from 5,000 to 8,000.

A statement at the time from Huddersfield announced: “The Huddersfield Giants intention is that they will be moving to Dewsbury’s Flair Stadium, subject to RFL board approval, investing a projected £10m+ in developing the ground.”

The club have now confirmed that they have received RFL board approval whilst also confirming that the developments they propose are ‘due to be finished in 2027’.

RL Commercial managing director and the RFL’s current interim CEO Rhodri Jones was quoted in the Huddersfield statement as he announced that the Giants’ plan had been signed off on.

Jones said: “Following consultation with both Super League and Championship clubs, the RFL Board has approved Huddersfield Giants’ request to relocate to Dewsbury Rams’ FLAIR Stadium from the start of the 2027 season.

“The Board has considered the request carefully, including its alignment with the relevant provisions of the rulebook and the potential implications for future grading scores.

“We recognise the significance of this proposed investment and the opportunity it presents to support the club’s long-term plans, while ensuring the process remains consistent, transparent and fair to all clubs.”

The Giants will play their final home game at the Accu Stadium tomorrow [Saturday] when they host Castleford Tigers, with the club set to move out of Huddersfield and head to Dewsbury after that.
