The RFL have released a new statement regarding Salford Red Devils with the club warned about the salary cap limit being reintroduced.
Salford seemed to be in the clear with the RFL when the governing body approved their takeover, however, it was reported last night that players had not been paid as they normally would be on the final Thursday of the month.
Further reports suggest that they have still not been paid today with payments expected next week instead, something that has caused uproar among fans.
It’s also brought about questions on how the RFL approved the takeover and lifted the salary cap limits that had previously been imposed on Salford Red Devils.
The RFL have now released a statement of their own in which they explain that the Red Devils have effectively been reminded of the special measures situation with a meeting planned for Tuesday to discuss the possible reintroduction of a limited salary cap.
That statement read: “Following an emergency meeting of the RFL Special Measures Committee, the RFL have contacted Salford Red Devils to reiterate the position regarding Special Measures.
“The RFL have been in regular contact with the club to understand their latest position, following the month end – having previously sought and received assurances regarding club financial sustainability.
“The Committee will meet again on Tuesday to consider the position, and whether the Special Measures which currently apply to the club should be extended to the reinstatement of a Club Financial Sustainability Cap.”
Salford lost 42-0 to Hull KR last night with the Red Devils putting in a dire performance that has seen them slip to three defeats from their opening three games, conceding an average of 52 points per game and only scoring on try.
