RFL in advanced talks over England series despite worrying reports down under

The RFL have confirmed that they are still hoping to secure a home series for England this autumn despite news from down under today with reports claiming that Australia are pushing a revived Four Nations tournament without England.
This would include England’s rumoured opponents in this series: Tonga.
They reached the quarter-finals of last year’s World Cup having lost to England in the 2017 World Cup semi-final and are led by former St Helens boss and three time Super League Champion Kristian Woolf.
However, this “secret plan” to bring back the Four Nations with Australia, New Zealand, Samoa and Tonga competing, would mean England would lose their opponents for this year if it went ahead.
It is also a shame to see England not considered in the tournament. These reports come from the Sydney Morning Herald who claim the tournament will be held in Australia and New Zealand.
That said, England fans can be reassured that the RFL are in talks to secure this home series and an announcement could be made soon.
An RFL spokesperson told Serious About Rugby League:
“There’s no change to our position. We are in advanced talks to secure a home series this autumn, and hope to make an announcement soon, hopefully before the France game.”
It is important England prepare for the 2025 World Cup in France in the right way.
They showed plenty of promise last year and need the right platform to allow them to kick on.
A series against a top class opponent this year would be a vital step in providing that.
