RFL give Salford Red Devils their latest ‘restriction’

Salford Red Devils head coach Paul Rowley

The Rugby Football League have confirmed that Salford Red Devils will be ‘restricted to seven interchanges in tonight’s Challenge Cup Fourth Round tie against Bradford Bulls’.

Salford Red Devils remain subject to the Sustainability Cap, which was reimposed ahead of last Friday’s Super League clash at Castleford Tigers. The RFL rejected ‘attempts early this week to make changes to the squad that travelled to Castleford’.

The RFL confirmed in a statement on Friday night: “However, following confirmation of the sale of Marc Sneyd to Warrington Wolves, therefore creating space under the Sustainability Cap, the RFL have granted permission for the addition of two players who were not eligible for the Castleford match – Jayden Nikorima and Ethan Ryan.

“That meant making two changes to the 17-player squad Salford submitted for the match on Wednesday. Such changes lead to a reduction in the number of interchanges available, barring exceptional circumstances. The RFL have ruled that the sale of Sneyd to Warrington can be considered in that category, and does not lead to the loss of an interchange.

“However there are no equivalent circumstances behind the replacement of Nene McDonald in the squad that was originally declared, therefore Salford lose one interchange.”

Meanwhile, Rowley had some choice words this week on how he was dealing with the Salford financial saga.

In response to whether he’s been more of a counsellor in recent weeks than a coach, he said: “Not really because I haven’t really seen them. I think I’ve needed a therapist or something.”

On last week’s defeat to Castleford, he added: “We were always going to make mistakes defensively and offensively as well but try and find a way through hard work. I thought they did that so I’m very grateful to the lads for coming together in the manner that they did.”
