RFL break silence on Salford Red Devils situation as liquidation confirmed

Salford Red Devils

The Rugby Football League has released a statement following the liquidation of Salford Red Devils.

Following months of financial uncertainty, late payments and HMRC hearing adjournments, Salford, in its current guise, has reached the end of the road.

The club has officially been wound up by the High Court in London, with the club’s owners failing to find the funds needed to settle their debts and keep the organisation afloat.

As such, Salford City Reds (2013) has ceased to exist and the RFL has now confirmed that the club’s membership to the RFL has been terminated with immediate effect, bringing an end to 152 years of history.

However, plans are already being made for a phoenix club to rise from the ashes and take the club’s spot in the league to keep the club’s name alive at least.

Whether the phoenix organisation will be able to pull things together quickly enough to compete in the 2026 Championship, though, remains to be seen.

The RFL statement has confirmed that the board will meet on Thursday with more details to follow.

An RFL statement read: “Following today’s court decision, Salford Red Devils’ membership of the RFL has been terminated with immediate effect.

“The RFL Board will meet tomorrow, following which, detail on the process to new club ownership will be advised.”

The Championship fixtures were released on Tuesday morning, with Salford due to get the new season underway with a home game against Oldham on Friday, January 16.

Will anyone at the RFL face disciplinary action for their failure and incompetence in carrying out “fit and proper persons” tests when approving this disastrous takeover. Salford haven’t gone under due to an inability to compete, they went under due to failures by the RFL to keep chancers out of the sport. If there are no such requirements then heads should roll over that, and a retrospective check made to ensure club owners can meet their commitments to their creditors, the players, the staff the fans, and the sport!

My heart goes out to the staff, players, the genuine fans of Salford, you truly deserve better than this! I really hope genuine buters, with the financial clout, can be found to resurrect the club. Additionally, .I hope measures are in place to stop those there now from any shenanigans in which they’ve a clever way to profit out of this debacle!

Absolutely on point, no interest in the sporting club only wanted the land grab for vast future profits

There’s more chance of Lazarus rising than there is of Salford reforming. I see the ‘bottler’ Irwin has reappeared to see how many more fools he can take in.

Does anyone know if they still have the land?
Don’t forget for future reference; fences can always be pulled down frequently.
