Revelation about new St Helens signing sees former club doctor quit

The Manly Sea Eagles club doctor Dr Nathan Gibbs has left Manly Sea Eagles, just days after it was revealed that new St Helens signing Curtis Sironen had been forced to play by his former club.

Sironen’s contract ended at the end of the 2021 after playing for the Sea Eagles for the past five seasons, but father Paul had revealed to the World Wide of Sports that his son was suffering with a knee injury throughout the season.

That meant that Curtis was told he was free to leave, with St Helens picking up the second-rower on a two-year deal.

However, father Paul had spoken out for the first time regarding the situation.

“Curtis could feel his knee just wasn’t right but the club were short staffed at the start of season and basically guilted him into playing,” said former NRL international and dad Paul.

“He broke down as a result early in the season and it ruined his whole year.

“The surgery found four pieces of floating bone in the knee and it kept causing him problems – he had to have it drained three times over the course of the year.

“Then late in the season they said they would give him a farewell game against the Bulldogs – they won easily but he sat most of the game on the bench and got just seven minutes.

“I’m dirty on the way he was treated – it wasn’t right and there was little thought given to his welfare.”

And, now Gibbs clearly feels strongly about the incident – enough to leave his well-respected post.

Sironen is one of five new signings St Helens have made alongside Konrad Hurrell, Will Hopoate, James Bell and Joey Lussick as they aim to defend their title four years in a row.
