Revealed: Why Sam Tomkins avoided ban after injuring Wigan Warriors star

Sam Tomkins

Over the weekend, Wigan Warriors claimed a vital win over in France, Leeds Rhinos suffered a crushing blow, Warrington Wolves claimed a key win over Hull FC in the race for the play-offs against the likes of Hull KR and Salford Red Devils.

It is one of the most competitive Super Leagues we have ever seen which is what makes bans at this stage so detrimental.

Castleford Tigers are in a relegation battle with Wakefield Trinity and will be lamenting the loss of star signing Liam Horne to a two match ban for a dangerous throw and Liam Watts to a one match ban for a trip.

At the other end of the table, Kaide Ellis has been banned for dangerous contact against Catalans Dragons but Wigan fans may also be unhappy that Sam Tomkins has avoided a ban for raising the knee at Brad O’Neill.

He was charged for the incident but only fined.

The RFL simply said in the minutes: “Raised knee by ball carrier.”

No mitigating circumstances were listed so the reason behind him avoiding a ban is as simple as the fine was deemed sufficient punishment.

Following the latest round of Betfred Super League & Betfred League One fixtures, the Match Review Panel have issued the following sanctions:

Liam Horne (Castleford Tigers) – Grade D Dangerous Throw – 2 Match Penalty Notice and a ÂŁ250 Fine

Today’s meeting considered incidents from the weekend’s Betfred League One fixtures, as well as the Betfred Super League, because the League One Promotion Play-Offs start next Sunday (September 3) – so any suspensions would kick in immediately, with any challenges to be heard at this week’s independent Operational Rules Tribunal (Tuesday August 29).

The weekend’s Betfred Championship fixtures will be considered as normal at a meeting of the Match Review Panel on Thursday, with any suspensions delayed until the weekend of September 9-10, to allow players to challenge at next Tuesday’s Operational Rules Tribunal (September 5).
