Round 18 of the Betfred Super League was a huge weekend in the context of the Super League season with Leeds Rhinos rounding off a massive week of fixtures with a vital win over Salford Red Devils capping off a weekend that saw Wigan Warriors stunned by Wakefield Trinity.
We also saw a great clash between Warrington Wolves and St Helens, a crushing blow to Castleford Tigers against Leigh Leopards and a Hull derby as Hull FC defeated Hull KR.
However, the big result of the weekend was at Belle Vue.
Wigan looked to have the game in the bag when they led 20-12 but Trinity battled back 24-20 only for Wigan to again seemingly have the game won with a fifth try.
Then though Joe Shorrocks was penalised for a late hit and Will Dagger nailed a penalty to make it 26-all sending the game to golden point where he would striker a dagger to their hearts with a drop goal.
The position for the drop goal came from a controversial knock on call which had some fans calling for an apology.
However, former official shut down these suggestion on social media as he said:
“Correct call. Defenders can’t just disappear. He gets up to the side and the ball catches his foot.”
He then added:
“It’s a 50/50 call that some will feel its a penalty, some (me included) think it’s up to the ball carrier to be more aware of surroundings and just give yourself a second to then play it. It’s not a shocker and in need of an apology.”
As expected, the penalty Shorrocks gave away was looked at by the match review panel as was always going to be.
Here is what the panel had to say about the incident:
“Player is late but footage does not show flexion to the head or neck of the opponent.”
