Revealed: Super League star has been playing with broken bone

Jake Connor went down with a knock in Huddersfield Giants' final pre-season game, but Ian Watson has offered a positive update.

Many were surprised when Jake Connor was named for Huddersfield Giants reserves last week instead of taking on Leeds Rhinos.

But it is all about the long game for Giants boss Ian Watson who explained his approach to Connor last week:

“Jake’s been probably, I think through his career, especially if we go back to Hull and Hull will tell you that, they probably tried to build the team in and around Jake and just look at Jake being an individual and try and win them games.

“But that wasn’t the reason we brought Jake here. We brought Jake to be a part of our team and to be a team player and to improve certain areas as well. What we need him to do is do certain things for the team, which sometimes are not natural when you’ve got somebody who’s such a talented attacking player.

“There’s some things that obviously he’ll lean on more than he will, per se. Some of the players who haven’t got that natural talent. So for us, we need to work on the things that are going to get him into them positions to be able to do that. We spoke about his physical condition, we spoke about his knee.

“We need to do the right things and build him. So just send him to the reserves this week in the chat we had.”

Remarkably, Watson also revealed that Connor was playing with a broken thumb earlier this season:

“What people don’t know as well when we were really down on troops Jake was playing with a broken thumb.

“So Jake’s put his hand up for this club. What we’ve got to do is do the right thing.”
