Revealed: Super League side struck by illness

Leeds Rhinos stadium in Super League

Last night we saw Leeds Rhinos and Hull KR collide, Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves battle and Huddersfield Giants and Wakefield Trinity meet.

It was a great night of rugby and a night where Leeds suffered a crushing defeat.

The Rhinos could have moved joint sixth with a win over the Robins who instead move level on points with the sixth placed Salford Red Devils.

The Rhinos were favourites but were 18-12 down at halftime despite tries from Jarrod O’Connor and Corey Johnson.

In the second half they had the weight of possession and Ash Handley levelled matters but they would rue their missed chances when debutant Brad Schneider won the game with a drop goal.

After the game, Rohan Smith reflected on the defeat:

“Yeah, for sure. Any golden point loss is hard to take because you know you’ve gone the distance but not got the job done.

“I thought on a difficult night, conditions wise, we let ourselves down with a couple of those tries early in the game where I didn’t think we were in any trouble defensively but but we had one play poor and that hurt us a couple of times for some points.

“I don’t think they scored in the second half try did they? So it was good positive and the way we were attacking with our defence at the back end we kept creating opportunities for ourselves to win it but clearly we let ourselves down with some possession skills throughout the game.

“In the first half there was probably a couple of overplay errors that hurt us and then the second half was some mess around the play of the ball that hurt us.”

At least with injuries, Leeds got off lightly with only Blake Austin failing a HIA and he shouldn’t miss any games due to a week off.

However, Leeds have been struggling with illness Smith revealed:

“Yeah, no I don’t think, I don’t think any other injury concerns. There was a little bit of illness through the group in the last couple of days through a few guys but nothing, yeah, nothing significant we had.”
