Revealed: Floods cost Castleford Tigers Super League status in IMG gradings

The first ever IMG grades have been revealed with Leeds Rhinos, Wigan Warriors, Warrington Wolves, Hull KR and others being awarded Grade A status but not every Super League club was happy with the verdict.

The most dissatisfied club was perhaps Castleford Tigers who were left out of the top 12 spots which would equate to a Super League standing next year if that system was in place as it will be in 12 months time.

They however, maintain that there was a mistake made in the process and have appealed the decision. The club have also worked to explain the situation of COYF Podcast.

Mark Grattan appeared on the podcast and revealed how the floods from the storm recently delayed the Tigers and worked against them: “Obviously, I got side-tracked and waylaid dealing with the floods and everything else. So we went through all the details of finances, so the RFL had met the mistake, which we said ‘yeah, we agree with that, that’s not right, so that’s half a point deducted’; but then I realised I’d missed one data point out on turnover, which was around some grant funding and lottery from two of the years. I told Tony that’s where the mistake was when he was telling me all the dates behind the numbers.”

That said, he still expected that the situation would have been resolved before the announcement. He explained: “I was expecting all that to be sorted out at that point. Tony then said he just needed to go in and have a look at it, and came back about 40-50 minutes later and said he’d spoken to somebody else on the RFL board, and their decision was that we could appeal this, that they would be releasing the gradients tomorrow with us as 13th place.

“Obviously, we weren’t happy with that. I spoke to Simon Johnson, the chairman; he said that they’ve got a board meeting the following morning, and they were looking at any suggestions, and nothing was off the table. So I went back and said, our suggestion is that your mistake masked our mistake.”
