Tommy Makinson was one of several Super League stars to bow out last night with the Wigan-born winger signing off in defeat against Wigan Warriors.
Despite being born in Wigan, it was with St Helens that Makinson made his name as he went on to have an incredible career wearing the Red Vee, lifting five Grand Final trophies and a World Club Challenge.
The 33-year-old also secured the Golden Boot for the best player at international level in 2018, beating out NRL star James Tedesco, and Makinson has now confirmed that he will be heading down under to possibly work in the NRL.
Speaking to Sky Sports shortly after the 50-12 defeat to Wigan Warriors on Friday night, Makinson confirmed that he would be doing ‘some work with the NRL’ when asked.
“I’m heading to Australia in November and doing a few bits. That will all come out soon,” the winger said.
“I’m really proud of what I’ve got lined up, so I’m really excited. I’m not playing in the NRL, that’s for sure but hopefully I’ll be doing some good work down there with some good people over there, so it should be good.”
Makinson also spoke on his emotions to end his career at Wigan, with the Warriors having given 100 tickets to him so his family could pack out the stands.
“I don’t really get too emotional, but it’s been a great journey, one filled with ups and downs, a rollercoaster,” he said.
“I’m really proud, especially to finish it here with Catalans, such a prestigious and great club, and to finish it with Ben [Garcia] here… it’s been an emotional ride, but yeah, when I pack it up, I won’t get too upset, but I’m just so privileged I’ve got to do this journey.”
Makinson bows out with over 330 Super League appearances, 10 appearances for England, and the fourth-most tries of any player in Super League, but he now takes his talent down under for an off-field role in the NRL.
