Reports: Warrington Wolves join race to sign Rhyse Martin

Rhyse Martin is one of the highest-profile Super League players who will see their contract expire at the end of the current campaign and Leeds Rhinos are facing a battle to keep him with a third team now reported to be interested.

Martin has been one of Leeds’ best signings since their last Grand Final win in 2017 with the Papua New Guinean forward signing in 2019 and going on to make 118 appearances in Blue and Amber.

He’s racked up the tries and sits with almost 950 points with his kicking proving crucial across the past five years but Leeds now face a real fight to keep hold of him. It had been reported earlier in the year that The Dolphins were interested, whilst Martin has also spoken on his desire to see an NRL team in his native PNG.

Talks of a PNG team have subsided but that doesn’t make Leeds’ job of re-signing him any easier as it’s been reported earlier this week that Leigh Leopards have tabled a “lucrative offer”. That was first reported by Rugby League Live and Rohan Smith has since spoken on the matter.

He explained that Leeds are keen to keep hold of Rhyse Martin but they’ll now also have to fight off a third team with Sky Sports‘ Jenna Brooks reporting that Warrington Wolves are keen to sign the PNG star.

Smith had batted back talk of Rhyse Martin leaving the club, confirming that a contract offer had been tabled and that new Sporting Director Ian Blease would set about working on a deal as soon as he begins work on Monday.

But will they be able to fight off offers from both Leigh Leopards and Warrington Wolves with Wire being confirmed as holding interest in Rhyse Martin by Brooks live on Sky’s broadcast of Super League tonight.

She said: “Rhyse Martin is off contract at the end of this year. Now, we know that the Rhinos are quite determined to hold on to him. There’s reports suggesting that the Leigh Leopards have tabled an offer.

“Well today I understand that Warrington are also interested in potentially signing the goal-kicking second row so plenty of interest for Rhyse Martin.”

Warrington are set to lose Matty Nicholson to Canberra Raiders next season with that move reported but not yet confirmed by the club and Martin would be a direct replacement for the youngster.
