Reports: Former Hull KR boss in running for Leeds Rhinos job

Leeds Rhinos are still without a head coach after parting ways with Rohan Smith just over two weeks ago and there has now been an update from Sky Sports’ Jenna Brooks with a former Hull KR boss one of six names mentioned.

Rohan Smith and Leeds Rhinos ‘parted ways’ ahead of the club’s game against Leigh Leopards in Round 15, a game that the Rhinos would go on to win, with that decision ending two years of Smith in charge at Headingley.

The Australian took the club to the Grand Final in his first season but missed the playoffs in 2023 and left the team four points adrift of the top six. Victory over Leigh under interim coach Chev Walker has actually seen that gap cut to just two points and Leeds Rhinos could actually head into the top six with a significant win over London if Catalans lose to Hull KR.

That game will be overseen by Chev Walker who spoke to BBC West Yorkshire earlier in the week to confirm that he didn’t have a timeline for how long he will be in interim charge, simply explaining that he was going about business as usual.

There’s now been an update from Sky Sports‘ Jenna Brooks though with the Australian providing information on early front-runners Paul Rowley and Brad Arthur, as well as four other candidates.

Speaking ahead of the Warrington Wolves and Huddersfield Giants game at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, Brooks gave her weekly roundup of news in which she addressed Leeds Rhinos’ search for a new head coach.

The Australian explained: “They are still searching for their next head coach. Paul Rowley and Brad Arthur are still in contention, as are Justin Morgan and Justin Holbrook.

“You’ve also got Dean Young and Jason Demetriou. What I do know is that the club are determined and eager to make a decision and make a decision quickly.”

Both Justin Morgan and Justin Holbrook have experience coaching in Super League before with Morgan taking Hull KR into Super League during a spell from 2005 until 2011 before returning down under.

Meanwhile, Justin Holbrook has just been appointed as Australia assistant coach to Mal Meninga and has Super League experience with St Helens, with whom he won a Grand Final.

Other candidates that were name-checked, Dean Young and Jason Demetriou have spent their entire coaching career down under with Young at St George Illawarra Dragons and Demetriou recently sacked by South Sydney Rabbitohs.
