If there is one news item that has dominated the headlines in 2022, it is the future of Wigan Warriors star Bevan French.
From signing a new deal at Wigan, to signing for NRL club Newcastle Knights, the rumour mill has been going into overdrive about potential avenues for the Australian livewire.
However, one link that continues to do the rounds, popping up every now and then is that of French to Leigh Centurions.
Owner Derek Beaumont has been outspoken about his desires to reach Super League and then build for a title tilt in a very short space of time, but with French on the books, that would be a much more likely reality.
And, Bradford Bulls reporterĀ The Game Caller has revealed that he has been in contact with Beaumont in recent weeks, confirming that the Leigh owner is desperate to land French for 2023 and beyond.
“There’s been a lot of murmurs on where Bevan French goes next year. Does he get a new deal at Wigan or does he go elsewhere?” The Game Caller said onĀ The Full Eighty Minutes podcast.
“I was speaking with Derek Beaumont at the Summer Bash and he wants Bevan French at Leigh next year and he’s prepared to meet his agent’s contract demands.
“That would be an absolute coup for the Leigh Centurions if they get Bevan.”
The Game Caller also believes that the desire to go after the likes of French shows a new direction for the Centurions than in previous years.
“There are issue with who they are keeping in the current squad with the quota spots.
“Chris Chester, Adrian Lam and Derek Beaumont (have done a tremendous job), there is going to be a lot of movement especially if Bevan French goes there.
“This shows with Derek that this is a bit more patient and controlled on how they are doing their recruitment.
“When you talk about control, Leigh are favourites to go up and are going to go up in my opinion. Leigh are confident that they are now not going to be left until 1 October and the Million Pound Game when they would be left for scraps.
“They are showing the confidence that they are going to go up and Derek is backing them.”
Among those already signed for 2023 are the likes of Blake Ferguson, Lachlan Lam and Edwin Ipape – proof that Beaumont and Leigh mean business.
