Repeat or revenge, England audition and where Wakefield Trinity v Leigh Leopards will be won

Leigh Leopards will travel to take on Wakefield Trinity tonight a week after losing at home against the same opponents, but where and how will this week’s game be won?

Whilst last week was important – a win by 28 points or more for the Leopards would have ensured this tie was played in Leigh – it pales in significance to tonight’s clash, with both clubs yet to truly make their mark on a Super League play-off series.

Leigh actually hosted Wakefield at this stage of the season last year and they progressed thanks to a 26-10 win, only to lose to Wigan Warriors in the semi-final for the second year in a row. Providing Warrington beat Hull KR on Saturday night, the victors tonight will once again travel to face Wigan in the semi-finals.

Getting there is another matter though and we’ve looked at the key talking points of tonight’s game, as well as where the difference could be made.

Repeat or revenge

Even if Leigh had won last week, they’d have had to win by a considerable margin to land the home tie, something that they realistically lost when they suffered a shock defeat to Huddersfield in round 25.

Rather than avenging last week’s defeat, this game for them is about repeating last year’s play-off result – something that Trinity do want to avenge. Wakefield saw their dream return to Super League cut short by Leigh last season, and they’re now in a very strong position to march on given the home advantage and their seasonal advantage over Leigh.

Wakefield have won both meetings so far, last week 19-8 and back in March when they won 20-14, with their pack dominant on both occasions – a key area of tonight’s game.

The pack battle

Leigh will be without prop forward Robbie Mulhern whilst Wakefield are expecting to have both Ky Rodwell and Super League Dream Team star Caleb Hamlin-Uele back, two players who will make a major impact.

Having won last week without that pair, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where they lose with that pairing in, especially when Leigh are down one of their own middles.

The Leopards will likely bring Jack Ashworth and Isaac Liu back in, meaning it’s not as straightforward as Wakefield dominating this middle battle, but it’s fair to say that whoever does will be at a big advantage given how attritional play-off games can be.

Leigh’s point of difference

If there’s a true gamebreaker on the field outside of Wakefield’s big boppers then it’s Umyla Hanley, one of two other Super League Dream Team members in tonight’s game.

Hanley is on the cusp of an England call-up and fresh off Brian McDermott stating that play-offs will help shape his selection, Hanley has had the gauntlet put down for him to step up and have a big game.

Full-back David Armstrong also possesses the electric pace that can break open games like these and whilst Leigh certainly do have premium forwards, Joe Ofahengaue being the prime example, this match does feel like Leigh’s backs versus Wakefield’s forwards in terms of where the game will be won.

The verdict

Home advantage and the fact that play-off rugby is often won as a result of the work up front would suggest Wakefield progress here, but Leigh showed just how defensively stubborn they could be when they took on Leeds a couple of weeks ago. If they can produce a similar special display then they’ll surely come through but that’s far easier said than done, and for that reason Wakefield are the selection in what could be a nailbiter.
