Released Wigan Warriors half signs with League One club

A young talent who was released from Wigan Warriors at the end of the 2024 season has signed with a club in League One.

Former Wigan man Charlie Yeomans has been signed by League One outfit Newcastle Thunder ahead of their 2025 campaign that is set to begin with Round Two of the Challenge Cup this upcoming weekend.

Yeomans, whose brother Finlay scored in Wigan’s weekend friendly against Oldham, was part of the Wigan side who lifted the Academy Grand Final in September as the Warriors fought it out against rivals St Helens.

Wigan won that game 15-12 with Jack Purtill and Noah Hodkinson both getting on the scoresheet whilst Yeoman’s half-back partner Jack Farrimond, who also made eight Super League appearances in 2024, kicked a drop goal, a penalty and converted two tries.

Several players from that side have signed first-team contracts with Farrimond the most notable name, however, many featured against Oldham at the weekend including Yeomans’ brother Finlay as well as Lukas Mason, Kian McDermott, Noah Hodkinson, Austin Daniel, Nathan Lowe, Josh Cartwright and Taylor Kerr.

Unfortunately for Charlie Yeomans, no contract was offered at the end of the 2024 season but that has seen him earn an opportunity with League One Newcastle Thunder where he will gain invaluable experience.

He will play under former England international Chris Thorman with the North East native coaching his local side as they try and improve on last year’s last-place finish in the division.

Sharing the news of Yeoman signing, Thunder took to social media and announced: “We’re overjoyed to announce the signing of half-back Charlie Yeomans.

“Charlie joins Thunder from the Wigan Warriors Academy where he featured in their 2024 Academy Grand Final victory over St Helens.”

The youngster could be set to debut this weekend when Newcastle take on Batley Bulldogs in the Challenge Cup.
