Recently released Hull FC playmaker Morgan Smith has signed with a new club for the upcoming 2025 campaign.
Smith was one of three first-team players to be released recently with all three having only signed for the Black and Whites ahead of the 2024 season. That decision highlighted just how poorly the club’s 2024 recruitment had gone with only Herman Ese’ese and Jack Ashworth remaining for 2025.
Whilst Smith was released, he did play a major role in 2024 with the ex-Wakefield Trinity man making 26 appearances for Hull FC, albeit without nailing down a role. He split his time between the halves and hooker but with the Black and Whites recruiting heavily in both positions, the 26-year-old was deemed surplus to requirements.
It’s not taken long for him to find a new club though with Championship side Sheffield Eagles swooping in to sign the former Warrington man on a two-year deal, making him their fifth signing for the upcoming season.
Morgan Smith finds new club after Hull FC exit
Smith has 73 Super League appearances to his name but he’s no stranger to the Championship, a competition that he dominated during the 2022 season whilst at Featherstone Rovers.
He scored an impressive 22 tries whilst at Featherstone but has only scored four since then when up at Super League level, albeit one of those was the crucial game-winner against London Broncos in Round Three, helping save Hull FC from an embarrassing home defeat.
Back in the Championship, there’s hope that he can reignite his career and Sheffield certainly feel that’s the case given they’ve signed him to a two-year deal.
A club statement confirmed the signing, announcing: “Sheffield Eagles are delighted to announce the signing of Morgan Smith, following his departure from Betfred Super League side Hull FC.
“The 26-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the Eagles, which sees him become our fifth new signing ahead of the 2025 Betfred Championship season.”
In a video shared to the club’s social media, Smith said: “Pleased to be signing for the Eagles for the next two years. I can’t wait to see you and all and rip in for next year.”
Smith is the latest Super League signing for the Eagles with Hull KR’s Reiss Butterworth and Leeds Rhinos’ Corey Johnson both joining. That would clearly suggest Smith will return to his more natural position in the halves, something that could see him flourish.
He’s also not the only released Hull FC man to move to the Championship with former club captain Carlos Tuimavave joining Featherstone Rovers for the 2025 campaign.
