Referee confirms broken nose after being punched by player

When one certain referee – who doesn’t want to be named – took to the field to officiate a match between Milford and Oulton Raiders, the last thing he would have expected would be a hospital trip.

However, after yellow carding a Milford player, the official then showed the same player a red card for dissent, only to be punched in the face.

And, now the referee himself has had his say on the events that unfolded and the aftermath.

“This is the second time it has happened to me. It happened to me seven years ago,” he said.

“I’m going to take some time away from the sport now as it’s shaken me up.

“I’ve got a broken nose as well as bruises and scratches and my referee’s top was completely torn.”

Pictures shared by the official – which he has allowed Serious About Rugby League to use – show the injuries caused by the player, with such actions needing to be highlighted to ensure they do not happen again.

He has since contacted the Castleford referees’ society who are said to be dealing with the matter.
