Red Star confirm League One intentions

Red Star Belgrade have confirmed they are preparing a bid to become a League One side as early as 2021.

Belgrade made history in 2019 as they became the first Serbian side to play in the Challenge Cup. They were beaten in the First Round by Millom.

In a statement on social media, whilst they say they believe there is “strong potential” for the bid, they will not submit a bid until they have “sufficient investment and sufficient membership.”

Once an application is submitted, the RFL will then do their due diligence and put it to a vote to the other clubs in the league.

The statement ends: “We love rugby league, and want to see it rise in popularity. We want to be a model for expansion across Europe.”

Should their application be successful, there could be as many as three teams entering League One in 2021, with Ottawa Stags and New York City Rugby League also putting forward applications.
