‘Ready to go’ – Leeds Rhinos primed as playmaker hails ‘positive signs’

Leeds Rhinos are ‘ready to go’ according to playmaker Matt Frawley who has hailed the ‘positive signs’ from pre-season so far.

The Rhinos are one of the only Super League sides to have a pre-season friendly already under their belt having played on Boxing Day against Wakefield Trinity, and  Frawley has claimed that the club have benefitted massively from that.

Leeds won 18-16 that day but the result was largely irrelevant. Instead, it was about testing the new combinations and ultimately having footage and data to work on and improve on – something that Frawley claims the club have.

Speaking on the Leeds Rhinos YouTube channel, he explained: “We reviewed it quite thoroughly actually as obviously it was our first hit out of the year. Because we’ve had a bit of time to review it, we’ve just covered a few things that we want to get out of the game  – some positive things and some things we need to work on.

“It was a good hit out and we can take some things from it moving forward.”

The ability to review game tape is something that few Super League clubs can do given the huge number of cancelled games this past weekend with the likes of Castleford Tigers, Warrington Wolves and Hull FC all seeing fixtures cancelled due to the weather.

The cold freeze also took the Rhinos away from Headingley where they’ve been training, however, they’re already back on their own turf and reaping the rewards.

Frawley explained: “It was a bit challenging last week with the conditions so we did a bit of work up at Kirkstall as Headingley was all frozen over. The ground staff have done an awesome job to get us back on today and surprisingly, it’s in pretty good nick.”

Giving his own verdict of how the Boxing Day game went, Frawley noted the influence of new signing Jake Connor who had to deputise at full-back after named starter Alfie Edgell suffered a fractured jaw.

Asked if he was pleased with how combinations gelled, the Australian said: “I think so, obviously you’re not going to be real silky early days in your first game. Everyone has a few cobwebs and everything but we picked up where we left last year and played some decent footy.

“Then Jake has come in and did a really good job so I think there were some positive signs, but as I said also some things to work on.”

Now just one month away from the Super League season launch, Frawley has claimed the club are ‘ready to go’ for their Round One clash against their Boxing Day foes Wakefield Trinity.

“It’s exciting,” he said.

“Everyone’s sick of getting flogged in training and they’re ready to go now. We’ve got a couple of hard weeks in front of us and obviously Ash’s testimonial against Wigan which will be a big day and then the Challenge Cup before Round One. It’s all just around the corner and I’m looking forward to it.”
