Rating each club’s transfers: Toronto Wolfpack

With 2020 approaching, we continue our series of articles looking at each team’s transfers ahead of the 2020 season.

This time, we look at Toronto Wolfpack, who will play their much-anticipated debut in the Super League this coming year.

Analysis

There is only one place to start, Sonny Bill Williams. The New Zealander has been a success in both codes throughout his career, and will no doubt bring some top level experience to the Wolfpack.

Even if he doesn’t play in that many games, from a marketing point of view, he is a dream for Toronto to have this season.

At 34, this may well be his final contract, but what he can add to the Wolfpack could be crucial for them.

With the retirement of Ashton Sims, they have replaced him with Brad Singleton. The Cumbrian was part of the Leeds side that won the treble in 2015 and the Super League in 2017.

The loss of Bob Beswick will be a big one, he was with Toronto from the start back in 2017, but has moved to League One with promotion hopefuls Newcastle.

The Wolfpack have replaced him with James Cunningham, who will add a more youthful insight to the hooker position. He is also experienced with almost 140 career appearances to his name.

Some squad players, or those who have been out on loan have also left the club. Ryan Brierley and Nick Rawsthorne had both been out on loan in 2019 before leaving the club permanently.

Greg Worthington will spend a short time out on loan, having signed a nine-game deal with Featherstone.

Overall, there has been some very good business for the Wolfpack. If they do what they did well in the Championship in the same ruthlessly efficient manner, then they should be OK.
