Ranking the top five packs currently in Super League

Every good team has a superb pack. In fact, it is often the team with the best pack in Super League who ends up winning the trophies.

But who possesses the best pack in Super League currently?

Here’s our top five:

5. Catalans Dragons
There was a time when the Dragons had the best pack in Super League but the loss of Gil Dudson and Sam Kasiano will hit them hard. Their back three of Ben Garcia, Mike McMeeken and Matt Whiteley is top tier whilst the signing of Siosuaia Taukeihao gives them real bite down the midd.e

4. Wigan Warriors
Wigan have a pair of strong starting props in former Super League Champion Brad Singleton and Liam Byrne. Meanwhile, Sam Powell is criminally underrated as is Morgan Smithies who is every coach’s dream. As for their backrow of Liam Farrell and John Bateman – assuming he stays though even if he leaves they will still have the likes of Kai Pearce-Paul and Willie Isa in 2023 – it is top tier.

3. Leeds Rhinos
Leeds have 2022 Dream Team prop Mikolaj Oledzki in their front row which gives them power and work rate that most teams wish they had. In Kruise Leeming and Jarrod O’Connor they have two brilliant nines whilst Leeds’ other options at prop are quality. As for their backrow, it is up there with the best with James Bentley and Rhyse Martin joined by the perfect modern 13 in Cameron Smith. The fact Morgan Gannon doesn’t get into the first 13 speaks volumes.

2. Huddersfield Giants
Huddersfield have an exceptional pack. Chris Hill was back to his best in 2022 and underlined that in an England shirt. Oliver Wilson meanwhile is quickly becoming a likely England international. Nathan Peats is a strong number nine whilst Luke Yates is one of the finest 13s in Super League. Chris McQueen is a try scoring machine and a member of the 2022 Dream Team whilst Josh Jones is also top quality.

1. St Helens
Was there ever any doubt? The Saints’ success has been built on their middle units as the suffocate teams time and again. They control possession and territory on the back of their pack and that is why they have won the last four Grand Finals. Alex Walmsley is one of the best props in Super League history and Matty Lees could soon follow him. James Roby is up there with the greatest of all time in Super League whilst Morgan Knowles is currently Super League’s premier 13. As for Joe Batchelor and Sione Mata’utia, if you’re keeping Curtis Sironen out of the starting 13 you’re very good.
