Ranking the top five captains currently in Super League

Super League is blessed with some great captains and some new ones have recently been named with Carlos Tuimavave taking on the role at Hull FC, John Asiata at Leigh Leopards whilst Lee Radford confirmed that Paul McShane will keep the captaincy at Castleford.

This got us thinking, who are the five best captains in Super League:

5. Paul McShane – Castleford Tigers
A former Man of Steel, a great hooker who does big minutes and subsequently a natural leader as he directs the attack and a player always in the thick of the action. He is a very trustworthy skipper.

4. Shaun Kenny-Dowall – Hull KR
You’d have to go a long way to find a captain of his experience in the NRL in Super League. A former NRL winner who very rarely gets injured, 2022 besides, and a great attacking threat, he is a super skipper.

3. Ben Garcia – Catalans Dragons
Garcia had big shoes to fill when Remi Casty left and he has more than filled them. A real grafted with great physicality, he is in the middle of everything for the Dragons and that helps make him a good captain.

2. Luke Yates – Huddersfield Giants
A powerful runner, a player who leads by example and a player who does big minutes in the middle of the field. Every week he leaves everything out on the field and that makes him the perfect captain for Ian Watson’s hard working Giants.

1. James Roby – St Helens
Who else was it going to be? The only captain to lift four consecutive Super League trophies and the joint second most successful skipper in Super League history behind Leeds Rhinos legend Kevin Sinfield and alongside Wigan Warriors legend Sean O’Loughlin. Speaking of Sinfield, Roby topped his Super League appearance record in 2022.
