Ranking the five best NRL halfbacks ahead of the 2022 season

The NRL will soon be ready for round one, with Penrith Panthers now the reigning champions.

Which halfbacks, however, will be staking their claim to be the best in the competition?

Below is our current top five, in descending order…

5. Sam Walker

What a year for the rookie! Walker’s 19 try assists in the regular season put him behind just one halfback in the competition, incredible for a teenager. All in all, the rookie played 19 games and in those games boasted eight tries, 19 try assists, 22 linebreak assists and six forced dropouts.

4. Adam Reynolds

Bizarrely, South Sydney Rabbitohs let star halfback Adam Reynolds go despite the fact he registered five tries, six try assists, nine linebreak assists and forced eight dropouts. However, the Rabbitohs refused to tie him down to a long-term deal so the Brisbane Broncos pounced – and what a coup for the struggling side he will prove to be.

3. Daly Cherry-Evans

Despite Tom Trbojevic taking all the headlines in 2021, Daly Cherry-Evans still produced some masterful performances, registering 25 try assists which was the most of any halfback in the competition. The Manly Sea Eagles skipper ended up taking home eight tries of his own in 2021. All in all, Cherry-Evans played 22 games – with eight tries, 25 try assists, 17 linebreak assists, and 16 forced dropouts.

2. Jahrome Hughes

Jahromes Hughes was in sparkling form for Melbourne Storm in 2021, despite the club somewhat suffering from multiple injuries to key players. Despite Storm falling short in the semi-finals, Hughes still shone with 22 games under his belt and nine tries, 19 try assists, 13 linebreak assists, with 105 metres per game which outlines his devastating running game, too.

1. Nathan Cleary

This kid was incredible in 2021, helping to propel Grand Final winners Penrith Panthers to 12 straight wins in the early part of the campaign. Nathan Cleary also helped produce the goods when it mattered most in the clutch games. The 23-year-old registered 16 appearances with 10 tries, 19 try assists, 14 linebreak assists, and 19 forced dropouts.
