Ranking the five best NRL centres ahead of the 2022 season

Ranking the NRL stars is always a difficult job to do considering the level at which most in the competition play to.

We’ve already recorded the five best NRL halfbacks and fullbacks and put them in order and now it’s the turn of centres.

Trying to pinpoint five of the best for one position is always a difficult job, but we have certainly gave it a good go.

5. Reimis Smith

The Melbourne Storm centre enjoyed a stellar 2021 season, playing 23 gamesĀ  and scoring 14 tries. But, it was his overall work ethic and skill that earns him this place in the list. Smith also had three try assists, 11 linebreaks, 51 tackle breaks, and 81 metres per game.

4. Dane Gagai

Now at the Newcastle Knights, Dane Gagai had a brilliant 2021 season for South Sydney Rabbitohs which makes the decision to let him go even more bizarre. The centre scored ten tries as well as having 11 try assists. But, it was his brilliant runs out of defence that helped Souths get on the front foot that makes his place here a cert. 14 linebreaks, 79 tackle breaks and 133 metres per game were mightily impressive.

3. Justin Olam

Justin Olam just gets better with each passing season and the fact that he wasn’t included initially in the NRL Dally M nominations of the year in 2021 was a travesty. However, the Melbourne Storm centre eventually won the Centre of the Year after 11 tries, ten try assists, 11 linebreaks, 80 tackle breaks and with 123 metres per game to his name.

2. Joey Manu

Sydney Roosters’ Joey Manu is an incredible NRL star that just seems to fit into every position that Trent Robinson tries him. In 2021, he played fullback, halfback but mostly centre which gives him his place in the list. Manu scored ten tries and supplied seven try assists along with 92 tackle breaks, 12 linebreaks and 141 metres per game.

1. Stephen Crichton

It just has to be Mr Crichton at number one. Despite relatively average stats of eight tries and eight try assists, Crichton underlined his credentials as the best centre in the league with some incredible play and skill that epitomised his talent of such a young age.
