Ranking every Super League team by their goalkicking success

Super League

Rugby League is all about scoring tries but the art of converting them regularly decides games, as evidenced in Super League this past weekend when London Broncos lost in golden point to Leeds Rhinos despite scoring one more try.

The ability to consistently turn four points into six is arguably worth around six points on the Super League table across the course of a season, sometimes even more.

For a team such as Salford Red Devils, who have the ever-reliable Marc Sneyd, they’ve surged into fifth in Super League courtesy of five wins by four or fewer points.

Goalkicking often becomes even more important once it reaches the sharp end of the season and the play-offs with points at a premium in such high-intensity games.

With just three rounds left of the 2024 Super League campaign to go, we’ve ranked every team by the success rate of their primary goalkicker, that is the player who has taken the most attempts. Two teams have players with 45 or more attempts each, however, the success rate of the primary kicker is the definitive ranking.

Where every Super League team ranks by goalkicking success

12: London Broncos – Ollie Leyland (36/56 – 64.3%)

They’re at the foot of the Super League table and they sit bottom of these rankings too. Leyland has had a brilliant season but he kicks less than two-thirds of his attempts at goal and with the Broncos losing twice on golden point, it’s been costly.

11: Hull KR – Mikey Lewis (59/90 – 65.5%)

They’re top of the league with the most points scored but Hull KR could boast an even better record with an improved kicking game. The scary fact is that they’ve signed Rhyse Martin from Leeds Rhinos for 2025, meaning they’ll turn four into six far more regularly.

10: Huddersfield Giants – Jake Connor (22/32 – 68.75%)

The Giants have had a torrid season but they’re one of the clubs to try multiple kickers due to injuries. Jake Connor has been the main man with the tee of late but he’s struggled.

9: St Helens – Mark Percival (55/75 – 73.3%)

Saints have had to rely on others whilst Mark Percival has been injured and/or suspended but the centre remains their first-choice with the boot and has operated at just under 75%.

8: Leigh Leopards –  Matt Moylan (42/57 – 73.7%)

Like St Helens, Leigh have regularly had to switch their kicker up with Moylan missing games through injury and also being unable to kick due to that injury when he has been on the field. The likes of Zak Hardaker, Darnell McIntosh and Gaz O’Brien have all had a go with the boot but Moylan is the clear first choice.

7: Hull FC – Jack Charles (19/25 – 76%)

Like many below them in this list, Hull FC have had an awful season but one of the positives has been the promotion of youth and one of those shining lights has been Jack Charles. He’s kicked at over 75% when playing, however, FC have tried various players with the boot and the lack of tries means Charles has only attempted 25 shots on goal.

6: Warrington Wolves – Josh Thewlis (45/59 – 76.3%)

Warrington Wolves are the first team on this list to have two kickers with over 45 attempts, however, the player with the most attempts (Josh Thewlis) actually boasts a worse record than the other. Thewlis has been good with the boot but when Stefan Ratchford has played, he’s been incredible – even tying the record for most consecutive conversions at one point. Should he return for the play-offs then his record of 39/45 (86.7%) could be crucial.

5: Castleford Tigers – Rowan Milnes (48/61 – 78.7%)

Rowan Milnes has been one of Castleford’s better signings for 2024 with the half-back also contributing with the boot. At just shy of 80%, his boot has kept Castleford in plenty of games and could still prove vital in their aim to finish ‘top of the bottom four’.

4: Catalans Dragons – Arthur Mourgue (64/79 – 81%)

It’s been a slog of late for last year’s Super League runners-up but Catalans have been kept in games thanks to full-back Arthur Mourgue. He’s notched up 128 points with the boot off the tee and has even kicked a match-winning drop goal too.

3: Leeds Rhinos – Rhyse Martin (72/87 – 82.75%)

Rhyse Martin has undoubtedly been Leeds Rhinos most crucial player in 2024 with the second-rower notching up nine tries, six assists and crucially 72 goals. He’s set to be a massive loss for the Rhinos when he moves to Hull KR for 2025.

2: Wigan Warriors – Adam Keighran (53/60 – 88.3%)

One of the issues for Wigan in 2023 was converting their tries with Harry Smith struggling and despite the Englishman improving in 2024 (35/48 at 73%), the addition of Adam Keighran has been massive. The centre has been near automatic at times this season, missing just seven of his 60 attempts.

1: Salford Red Devils – Marc Sneyd (83/93 – 89.2%)

Is this really a surprise? The best goalkicker in recent years in Super League takes top spot for 2024, although he’s less than a percent better than Keighran. Sneyd was leading the Man of Steel standings prior to them going dark and it’s understandable, he regularly carries Salford to wins with his boot.
