Rangi Chase on verge of signing for new club

Former England international Rangi Chase is wanted by League 1 outfit Doncaster, according to League Weekly.

The 32-year-old cannot play professional rugby league until July when his two-year drugs ban expires.

However, the Dons are eager to put a contract in place before then with the club’s CEO Carl Hall a close friend of the 2011 Man of Steel winner.

Chase broke onto the Super League scene with Castleford in 2009 and within just two years he was playing for England, winning eight caps between 2011 and 2013.

But his departure from the Tigers in 2014 resulted in a major downward spiral as he failed to live up to expectations at Salford, Leigh and Widnes.

Off-field problems had threatened to derail Chase’s career a few times until he tested positive for cocaine midway through the 2017 season, resulting in a two-year ban.

This came just one month after signing a permanent deal with Widnes who sacked Chase almost immediately, leaving his Super League career in tatters.

Although a return to the top may be out of the question for the New Zealand-born playmaker, it seems he will get the chance to take to a rugby league field again.

It’s believed Chase has been working hard on his fitness over recent months and he could be a huge acquisition to Richard Horne’s team.

Doncaster currently sit fourth in League 1 having won two of their three matches so far, defeating Leon Pryce’s Workington Town 20-10 in their last league outing.
