‘Quite possibly’ – What Jake Connor has just said about Hull FC

Jake Connor during his time at Hull FC

Jake Connor will always be a player synonymous with Hull FC. For what he brought to the club during his six seasons at the Black and Whites, but also for what could have been.

Connor was part of the 2017 FC team which won the Challenge Cup when he starred at right centre throughout the campaign. The playmaker would go on to play at full-back and in the halves for Hull and produced try assists aplenty towards the back of his stint in East Yorkshire.

But ‘The Snake’ will always be remembered for what could have been, how he could have taken his career to the next level and become a Man of Steel contender and a regular England international.

After two years back at Huddersfield Giants, Connor is now going to be plying his trade for Leeds Rhinos for the 2025 season, a real make or break campaign for both himself and the club.

But things could have been so different for Connor, who could have been a Hull great had he played to a high level more consistently during his career, something which would have stopped FC from believing he was expendable. Even Connor himself thinks about how things could have played out differently, admitting recently that he thought he was going to retire at the MKM Stadium.

“Yeah quite possibly, I did think that (he would retire at Hull),” Connor told League Express. “At the time I left there had been previously been talk of a new deal and then Tony Smith came in and it broke down.

“I didn’t hear anything and things happened where I then ended up at Huddersfield. There was a time at Hull where I thought I could have stayed a lot longer. It’s been sad to see their downfall. I know they are trying to rebuild there, it was a good time in my career. I loved my time at Hull.”

Connor is now looking forward to all things Leeds Rhinos this term, and he’s delighted to have made the switch.

“It’s been great, since I came to the club I’ve loved every minute. It re-energised me and probably brought that enjoyment back to my game,” Connor added.

“I needed that fresh start. In a way Huddersfield was a fresh start but sometimes things don’t work out. Looking back, I felt I put some good performances in but it wasn’t the best time in my career. Hopefully this change is for the good. I’m not too sure why it didn’t work out at Huddersfield. Perhaps some individual performances weren’t good enough. Sometimes it’s tough to put an angle on it and it’s difficult but that’s in the past.”
