Sam Burgess has been hailed as ‘magical’ following Warrington Wolves’ 23-22 golden point win over St Helens last night.
Under the leadership of Sam Burgess, Warrington have transformed from a team that would go on both winning and losing streaks, serving as a club riding on the crest of a wave, to a team that can grit out wins in every circumstance.
Last night highlighted that as they were pegged back in the last-minute when St Helens scored through Jon Bennison to take the game to golden point. The Warrington of old would have perhaps collapsed and folded but up stepped George Williams to win them the game.
Speaking on that, Sky Sports pundit Jon Wilkin argued: “I had a chat with Paul Wood through the week and we were talking about the notion of ‘It’s always Warrington’s year’ and how annoying that is to the players and the staff.
“But Sam Burgess is so much bigger than that. It’s such an irrelevance for him. I just can’t even think he would even lose a night of sleep worrying about it always being their year.
“His confidence emits and it’s been absorbed by every single person in this organisation. He energises people, he gives them confidence and that’s what we’ve seen this year. It’s magical.”
Wilkin continued to speak to what a special game it had been as he piled the plaudits on Sam Burgess’ men and spoke about St Helens.
“We’ve seen a really special game of rugby league tonight. A really special game of sport at any code, any version of sport that you love to watch. Tonight delivered for a number of reasons.
“We’ve got a fallen giant in St Helens who’s faltered and not really got going this year who delivered. They delivered tonight. They were exceptional.
“It comes down to the finest of margins and after the season they have had, they just fluffed their lines. It wasn’t good enough.”
