‘Proper hard players’ – Man United legend Roy Keane lauds Super League amid Las Vegas verdict

Roy Keane

Manchester United legend Roy Keane will be watching on with interest this Saturday as Super League heads to Las Vegas.

Keane has spoken of his admiration of rugby league before and the Irishman could be heard lauding the sport on Sky Sports’ Super Sunday over the weekend, with the broadcaster taking the opportunity to plug the Vegas event to a huge audience.

Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves will be the two Super League teams involved in what promises to be a festival of rugby league at the Allegiant Stadium. England Women will also be in action against their Australian counterparts and that game will be wedged in between two NRL contests with Canberra Raiders facing off against New Zealand Warriors and premiers Penrith Panthers taking on Cronulla Sharks.

As such, the event is widely recognised as one of the biggest Super League has ever been a part of and with the action set to be showcased to a whole new audience, Keane believes the sport deserves the publicity and recognition on the back of it.

“It’s fantastic, the league started a week or two ago and I’ve watched a couple of the games,” Keane said in the Super Sunday studio after watching Liverpool beat Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. “Proper hard players, them and maybe they deserve that little bit more publicity and they’re spreading the word. Fantastic, Vegas, yeah.”

Micah Richards, Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Carragher joined Keane in the studio after the game, with the Leeds-born Richards, who counts Man City, Aston Villa and Fiorentina as former clubs chipping in.

“A Super Sunday from Vegas?,” he asked optimistically before Leeds Rhinos were mentioned. “I’d be buzzing if Leeds were there. Get me involved!”

The recognition comes just a couple of weeks after Wigan invited Man U trio Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Harry Maguire into training for a day in the build-up to the season and Mount was even spotted at the Brick Community Stadium watching on as Wigan opened up the competition against Leigh Leopards.
