Premier Sports and BBC Sport announce broadcasting bonanza

The third AB Sundecks 1895 Cup Final will be watched more widely than ever on Saturday with Premier Sports joining BBC Sport in providing live coverage of the mouthwatering clash between Featherstone Rovers and Leigh Centurions at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Final, which kicks off at midday, will be shown live on BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport website and BBC Broadcast Red Button, and also worldwide on bbc.com – and for the first time, will also be available to Premier Sports subscribers as an extension of their regular Monday Night coverage of the Betfred Championship.

Featherstone will be defending the Cup which they won at Wembley last year, beating York City Knights in a 41-34 thriller.

They are unbeaten in 2022 following the appointment of the former Leeds Rhinos and Toronto Wolfpack coach Brian McDermott and the signing of a number of star players including the Samoa centre Joey Leilua.

Leigh are set on revenge after suffering their only defeat of the season at Featherstone in February, having appointed the former Wigan Warriors coach Adrian Lam and recently added the New South Wales and Australia wing Blake Ferguson to their star-studded squad.

Mark Foster, the RFL’s Chief Commercial Officer, said: “This will be the third AB Sundecks 1895 Cup Final and we are delighted it will reach a wider audience than ever through BBC Sport and Premier Sports.

“The BBC have covered each of the previous two Finals, and will again provide superb exposure for the two leading clubs in the Betfred Championship, each with a passionate fanbase and playing some superb Rugby League.

“The regular Monday Night coverage of the Betfred Championship on Premier Sports has been a big hit already in 2022 and we are pleased that Premier will be able to add coverage of the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup Final.”

The AB Sundecks 1895 Cup was introduced in 2019 to provide a second and more realistic chance for non-Super League clubs to earn a place at Betfred Challenge Cup Final day, which has traditionally been a celebration for the sport of Rugby League.

Sheffield Eagles were the inaugural winners in 2019, beating Widnes Vikings in the Final, followed by Featherstone’s victory over York in 2021 after the competition was a victim of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 – with both games played at Wembley.

The 2022 Final will have a new venue at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which is staging the Betfred Challenge Cup Final for the first time.
