The Super League run-in has arrived and with just seven rounds left to play, it won’t be long until the play-offs are getting underway.
Wigan Warriors have been the standout team over the course of the 2024 campaign and they sit two points clear at the top of the table following their win over Leigh Leopards on Tuesday night. Hull KR are the side applying the most pressure beneath them, with the east Hull outfit chasing their first League Leaders’ Shield.
Warrington Wolves are two points further back, while Salford Red Devils, St Helens and Catalans Dragons currently occupy the remaining three play-off spots. The race to finish inside the top six is far from decided as well, with Leeds Rhinos four points off the pace, with hope of being able to kick on.
It makes for an interesting final few weeks of action then with plenty still to play for at the top end of the division. With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the key dates that look set to decide how the season pans out.
August 17 – Wigan Warriors v St Helens
The two rivals will go head to head at Magic Weekend, with Wigan looking to claim their second win over the Saints in the space of five weeks. Saints’ form has dipped since that contest on July 12, but after hammering Hull FC last time out and seeing some key players return from injury, they’ll be confident of building a head of steam heading into the play-offs. The League Leaders’ Shield is beyond them at this stage, but they’d love to land a huge blow to Wigan’s hopes of claiming it.
August 23 – Leeds Rhinos v Catalans Dragons
Leeds Rhinos know the odds are against them, but while it remains possible they will still be pushing to claim a spot in the top six. They’re four points behind the pace at present and they will be more than aware of how quickly things can change in Super League. Of course, much will depend on what happens between now and then, but right now it seems as though the clash between Catalans and Leeds at Headingley could have huge implications on the top six race.
August 24 – St Helens v Hull KR
Rovers have already beaten St Helens once this season and they’ll know that should they repeat the feat in Merseyside, they’ll stand a good chance of being able to keep up the heat on Wigan in the race for the League Leaders’ Shield. Whoever wins this one would also gain a pretty big psychological advantage ahead of a potential meeting in the play-offs.
September 6 – Wigan Warriors v Hull KR
As it stands this meeting could well be a showdown for top spot in Super League with the two sides currently occupying first and second. It’s a mouth-watering round 25 clash and while it could be a fraught occasion for both sets of fans, the neutrals will be tuning in hoping for another blockbuster of a contest. It’s fair to say the two sides have different styles, but they could gel wonderfully.
September 6 – Warrington Wolves v St Helens
Warrington started last week on top of the Super League table, but after losing to Hull KR on Friday night they are four points behind the pace at the top of the division. What will happen between now and September 6 remains to be seen but this one could have plenty riding on it. At the very least it will be a clash between teams jostling for position in the top six ahead of a potential play-off meeting.
