Warrington Wolves are already putting last year’s struggles behind them with two impressive wins to start the season against the two teams who contested the major finals in 2022: Leeds Rhinos and Huddersfield Giants.
The Giants are one of the sides expected to challenge St Helens for the title but it was the Wolves who came away with the win on Friday and looking back on the result Phil Clarke claimed that their star halfback George Williams looks like a Man of Steel winner in the opening two rounds of the season.
Clarke said on Sky Sports: “George Williams looked like a Man of Steel winner last week, a great kick from him this week created the opening try.”
Clarke impressed by Williams, Super League’s all time leading try scorer Danny McGuire was impressed by the speedy try scorer Matty Ashton: “He has speed to burn, I love watching this kid play. I think he is electric and when he gets the ball in open space, there is probably not many players in the competition who can deal with him.
“I really like watching that kid play. He is electric and a great find from the Championship and doing some amazing things.
“A great start to the season for Warrington.”
Clarke meanwhile believed there were encouraging signs for the Giants and Ian Watson as they battled back to make the score more acceptable:
“Ian Watson will be happy with this. You might not win every week but you want a side that will play the full 80 minutes regardless of what the score board is saying.”
McGuire then gave his assessment of the Wolves: “They had a rough season, the think with Warrington, Daryl Powell has all the players that he wanted on board. He has a big pack, some experience. There is pressure on them at Warrington but they are delivering at the minute.”
